Project examples
KŌIWI – Art Gallery of NSW
A durational performance by Victoria Hunt presented at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Stillphones supplied 50 wireless headphones to support a shared listening experience within an immersive environment of sound, movement and light.
The headphone system allowed audiences to enter a focused, intimate sonic space while remaining physically present within the gallery, enabling a collective yet deeply personal encounter with the work. The performance unfolds over extended time, exploring ancestry, memory and connection to place through embodied practice and spatial audio.
Delivered as a seamless, synchronised system, the headphones supported continuous audience flow and consistent audio quality throughout the duration of the work, integrating quietly into the broader technical and curatorial framework of the exhibition.
Soft Forest – ERTH
An immersive outdoor performance by Erth Visual & Physical Inc presented as part of Sydney’s Art & About program. Stillphones delivered a 100-headphone system to support a large-scale shared listening experience within the public environment of Paddington Reservoir Gardens.
Set within a twilight garden, the work combines large-scale puppetry, lighting and spatial sound to create a gentle, sensory journey exploring the fragility of the natural world. Audiences move through the space alongside Fauna, a towering creature who acts as a voice for the forest, inviting moments of calm, curiosity and connection.
The headphone system enabled consistent, high-quality audio across a shifting outdoor audience, allowing up to 100 participants per session to experience a synchronised and immersive soundscape. This created a focused listening environment within an open, public setting – supporting both the intimacy of the work and the scale of the event.
Working Memory: Pulse & Pressure – Sydney Biennale 2026
Presented as part of the Biennale of Sydney 2026, this immersive installation brought together sound, rhythm and embodied experience within a gallery setting. Stillphones supplied a 100-headphone system to enable a synchronised, shared listening environment for audiences moving through the work.
The piece explores the relationship between memory, the body and physiological response, using sound as a primary medium to shape perception and attention. The headphone system allowed for precise audio delivery and consistency across a continuously shifting audience, creating an intimate sonic space within a large-scale exhibition context.
Designed to integrate seamlessly into the exhibition environment, the system supported high audience throughput while maintaining clarity and cohesion of the audio experience throughout the duration of the work.
Tree Listening – Enlighten Festival, Canberra
Developed in preparation for a new work with Erth Visual & Physical Inc, this project explores the translation of tree physiology into sound, culminating in a public listening experience at Glebe Park.
Using sensitive contact microphones, geophones and electromagnetic sensors, recordings captured internal sounds and bioelectric activity from trees in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah. This data was converted into MIDI, forming a generative score shaped by environmental conditions.
For presentation, Stillphones delivered a 50-headphone system for an outdoor installation. Audiences sat in deckchairs beneath a mature elm, entering a shared, intimate listening space where the sounds of the trees were reintroduced into the landscape. The system created a focused sonic environment within an open park, enabling clarity, immersion and collective experience.
